Vladimir Antaki, born in 1980 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is a visual artist whose journey began amidst the vibrant cultural backdrop of Paris. His formative years were marked by an intense passion for the arts, leading him to immerse himself in art history and film studies at La Sorbonne. This foundational period not only deepened his appreciation for artistic expression but also broadened his understanding of the cultural and historical contexts that shape art.
In 2003, Antaki expanded his artistic horizons by relocating to Montreal, Canada, where he pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual and media arts at l'Université du Québec à Montréal, graduating in 2007. This period was pivotal in refining his artistic vision and methodology, setting the stage for his later works.
Antaki's artistic endeavors are deeply rooted in a reverence for cultural memory, diversity, and human connection. His celebrated series "The Guardians," is a profound testament to this commitment. It pays homage to the artisans and tradespeople - the custodians of what he refers to as "urban temples." These are spaces that stand as remnants of a bygone era, offering a stark contrast to the homogenized landscapes of modern retail.
His work, characterized by visually striking portraits, captures the essence of these individuals and their environments, inviting viewers to explore the beauty and history of these often-forgotten spaces. In 2019, Antaki's dedication to historical and cultural preservation was highlighted with the publication of a monograph on "The Guardians" by Kehrer Verlag, featuring a preface by Edward Burtynsky.
Antaki's work acts as a bridge, connecting the past with the present and bringing the forgotten and celebrated to light. His exhibitions have reached a diverse audience, showcased in public spaces and galleries across France, North America, Lebanon, Lithuania, the UK, and China. The current exhibition, 'Parfums d'Orient,' which he is part of at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and soon in Riyadh, invites viewers on a journey into the perfume souks of the Sultanate of Oman. This exhibition features life-size portraits accompanied by sound, offering an engaging experience that reflects Antaki's passion for sharing human stories and celebrating cultural heritage.
